The membership support model might be workable if you could build a
membership of 300+ people at say $35 each. Not impossible but a serious
undertaking, and membership comes at a co$t since it to has to be managed
like everything else.
For me as an individual renter and an exhibitor doing public programs the
killer is not print rentals, which I think are reasonable given the cost
of making prints and the small market available in which to present the
work. It's the shipping costs, and other related promotional costs (web,
print, etc). And wouldn't it be nice if a small exhibitor could actually
afford to run an ad in the paper rather than depend on writers/editors
who'd prefer stay clear from ag/exp films. The only people who can find
the work being exhibited must have their ear to the ground listening for
the slightest tremor.
