I'm in agreement with your comments above.
In other ways I feel like the lower-end market has opened up considerably.
Bolex and Eclair and CP cameras can be found for reasonable prices, and
there's still a number of reputable camera/lens techs working at
reasonable rates.
Glass is still expensive (though there are some affordable options there
too), so while film and lab costs have risen other costs have been
dropping at the same time.
As David menioned, the route of 16mm exhibition is a challending one, but
I don't perceive this as anymore challenging then trying to make and
exhibit work in 35mm. Sure more theaters can project 35mm but that
shouldn't imply that more theaters are then willing to show experimental
work (even it happens to be in 35mm).
