Hi Wendy,
I'll be bold and take that one on, since I'm now director of Los Angeles
Filmforum.
Pasadena Filmforum did directly evolve into Los Angeles Filmforum. (We can
debate the one word vs. two word variants of Filmforum - we currently try to
use the one word version to differentiate us from FF in NYC, but I think
it's a losing battle).
Terry Cannon started it - it's the 30th anniversary this year, depending on
how one dates things. The weekly programs began in January 1976, but the
first public event, a fundraise, was Nov 8, 1975. It moved to downtown Los
Angeles (the Wallenboyd Center at first) when Trish Knodle took over at the
end of 1983. A variety of others have run it, including, Buddy Kilchesty &
Richard Amromin, Jon Stout in the early 90s, and Mark Rance from 95 til 03.
Along the way it has moved to Hollywood, Silver Lake, Los Angeles
Contemporary Exhibitions in Hollywood, the Hammer Museum in West Los
Angeles, and now the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
Thus, one could argue that Pasadena Filmforum lasted from Jan 1976 to Dec
1983, when it became Filmforum. I have recently started actively adding the
words "Los Angeles" to that, but it still seems to be called either way.
There is an extensive & excellent booklet called "Scratching the Belly of
the Beast: Cutting-edge media in Los Angeles 1922-94" produced for
Filmforum's 20th anniversary when Jon Stout was director. Holly Willis was
the catalogue editor. I have a stack of them sitting next to me at the
moment and would be delighted to send you one. And more for Anthology if it
doesn't have one. Heck, I'll send them to other interested parties as well.
And there is also David James's brand=spankin' new book,
The Most Typical Avant-Garde : History and Geography of Minor Cinemas in Los
Angeles
Published May 1 - with a great deal of history of the scene in Los Angeles,
including Filmforum history.
We plan to have some 30th anniversary events at the end of this year or the
start of next year. Be on the look out!
Our current website www.lafilmforum.org has our current activities as well
as the past few seasons. I hope to soon be scanning the old Filmforum
fliers back to the 70s and posting them as well. For the 30th anniversary,
I also hope to compile a full list of Filmforum screenings, which I estimate
at about 1000, but let's see if time allows.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Best regards,
Adam Hyman
