Hello Eric,
I see you already had some knowledgable advice about 35mm silent speed
projection but I thought I'd give some particulars. The Castro Theatre in
SF has variable speed 35mm projectors (Century 35/70 dual), variable from
12-30 FPS, they do require manual timing to zero in on a specific speed;
also the Stanford in Palo Alto (which shows silent films often) has
digitally controlled variable speed motors on their projectors. This is
info from the one of the Castro's union projectionists. When I worked for
Landmark Theatres, silent speed was nearly unheard of, and if I remember
correctly, a tech would need to come in and change pullies and belts, etc.
A big headache for them. I'm sure this is no problem for places like
Pacific Film Archive though--generally it seems if a venue is running reel
changeover projection (as opposed to platters) it's probably likely they can
switch speeds. Hope that helps!
Timoleon
