I've found that it's better to shoot at 24 fps to avoid bad flicker when
doing a home video transfer, if you can afford to.

A few other tips:

*when you project the image that will be video-ed, make the image as small
as possible with a sharp focus.
(I project on a few sheets of flatwhite high quality typing sheets of paper)

*turn off auto focus on the video camera and focus the lens only once: right
on the plane you'll be projecting onto. (I tack a sheet with print right
where I'll be projecting and then focus the video camera on that print, then
leave the camera focused there from then on.)

*try to avoid having to run your good film thru the projector to get
everything set-up. I have a short one minute test reel that I run thru the
projector a bunch of times while I tweak everything.

*if your video camera has different settings (ideally a variable shutter),
then try different ones to find one that might not have as much flicker in
the image.

*finally, your super-8 image will be a little more cropped when you video
it, so shoot more towards the center of the lens with the super-8 camera.

Good luck!

Subject: transferring 8mm and Super 8mm to DV

Dear Frameworks,

I'm planning to shoot some 8mm and Super 8 footage that I'll transfer to
digital video. I want to
transfer it myself.

What should I keep in mind while shooting the film footage? I was planning
to shoot the S8 footage
at 18fps. Will I need to do anything special when transferring to video? Can
I project at 18fps?

I appreciate any feedback: as you can tell, I'm a novice.

Thank you.
Best regards,
Adam
