Open up the viewfinder sometime and you'll see that the frame edge
"you've been seeing" is simply a cutout in a mask of thin metal attached
to the viewfinder body with a couple of screws. It's a pretty "basic"
device and can be assembled wrong or knocked out of alignment. Getting
it relatively accurate is a hassle, but possible with a frame prism
viewer (attached at the "pressure plate" position) and patience.
(It's a toss-up between this and Geoff's microscope study of actual
hand-processed short lengths of BW stock.)
I could rent you one of these if you were able to convince me that I'd
get it back in due course - which would take some doing as it's such a
vital little item.

What I have seen happen with Bolex cameras is the viewfinder image
turns out to be off level - even subtle enough in live action shooting
but revealed in shooting titles, so I think it would be a good idea to
look out for this also on your tests.
