Re: what do you think of this?

Sounds like some of the reviews we get for
experimental films screened here in Portland.

Journalistic reviewers seem to have made a decision
very early on about what they are willing to engage
and what they are un-willing to engage. And it often
appears that this is non-negotiable.

Not at all surprising with work that requires (on some
level) that one rethink some very fundamental notions
about what a movie is. And gut reactions are easier to
come by.

The local reviews of Benning's California Trilogy were
appalling. The reviewer was content with ignoring
Benning's history as well as the history of
experimental cinema.

I wasn't around in the 1960s and 1970s, and have not
read many reviews in newspapers of the time, so I
don't know if this lack of adventure when it comes to
the movies is new or old. I'm beginning to think
there's been a strong culture shift towards more
conservative values and interests....but this is
speculation.
