I must also agree. The Liptin book remains very
inspirational to me-it spoke to the completist tech
trivia cravings within me with a sense of humor about
the whole thing but more importantly this irreverent
attitude which viewed technical issues as fascinating
in themselves but arbitrary or secondary to filmmkaing
was extremely liberating. It is very much an "anything
is possible" book (but very thorough on the hows).
Itwas also the first place I'd heard of Brakhage,
Baillie, Hindle, et. al. or Canyon Cinema for that
matter. These names-who are they? What *are* these
films? Seeking out Canyon, DOG STAR MAN (on video!)
and Brakhage's own books, etc. followed directly.
When I have taught I have recomended Lipton *and*
Pincus/Ascher.
