Right, but what about these particular circumstances, where a freelance
writer might want to generate income from the distribution of their
piece? You might make a case that the degree of harm is low, but I'm not
sure about the claim that absolutely no harm is done to anyone. And if you
compare the harm of just simply posting the link (and the harm of
registering at a site, which I don't think the VV does anyway) to the
potential harm to the writer, I think the less harmful choice is pretty clear.

I doubt that Carr would object to people reading the piece in various forms
it now exists, but I'm sure if given the choice between payment for her
labor or non-payment to demonstrate the glories of the internet, she would
probably choose to be paid for her labor.
