The iotaCenter would like to express its sadness at the loss
of a long-time mentor and friend, Dr. William Moritz, who died
Friday morning, the 12th of March. With his passing we have
lost a great scholar, who knew volumes regarding the history of
animation, experimental filmmaking, visual music, opera, and
numerous other subjects. His work, which included writing,
lecturing, teaching and curatorial activities raised the visibility
and level of discourse of abstract animation and visual music.
His role as ambassador for this art form has endeared him to
friends and colleagues around the world.

Watching Bill Moritz and Elfriede Fischinger travel from venue
to venue to share the work of animators working in the spirit of
visual music, especially Oskar Fischinger, was the inspiration
for the iotaCenter's Kinetica series. In 1998 the iotaCenter
assumed the stewardship of his extensive library and collections
of animation art, film and video, which became the basis of our
study center. Bill will be sorely missed; however, the iotaCenter
will continue its work to keep his invaluable legacy alive.

Many of you have been friends and colleagues of Bill throughout
the years. We share your sadness at his passing and wish you
comfort at this time. Those of you who would like to send a
memory for a memorial page on The iotaCenter's website, please
address your email to (address suppressed)
