Seattle has two fantastic options, Scarecrow Video, which all sorts of
people from Quentin Tarantino to the local alternative papers have dubbed
'the world's greatest video store'. i'd agree, except it's staffed in large
part with snobbish hipster assholes. rain city video is a chain with three
locations that can't compete in terms of the sheer number of titles, but it
has an almost comparable selection and the kind of staff that wants to chat
about movies with you. plus, they've got a number of 'gray market' videos
you can't find anywhere else like 'killer of sheep', 'superstar' and
'cocksucker blues'.
and then, honestly, the hollywood videos have molded themselves to their
clintele around here. they have little or no experimental films, but their
selection of foreign and independent videos is better than most every other
video store in town after the two i mentioned above. not necessary to
mention them in your list, but it's just kind of interesting how a chain
managed from on high can be so different in some ways in different cities
according to their tastes.
if you need any info on portland i can point you in the right direction for
that too.

"Unnerving that the desperate subtext of "Hey Ya!" has been airbrushed out
of the mass consciousness by the same mysterious process that transformed "I
Heard It Through the Grapevine" or "Billie Jean" into feel-good oldies.
Y'all don't want me here, y'all just want to dance to keep from cryin'."
