The 2004 Whitney Biennial opens on March 11th and runs until May 30th.
The show includes painting, sculpture, film, video, drawing, installation,
performance, and digital works.
The film program (at 7pm each evening, except certain Saturdays) includes a
special tribute to Stan Brakhage on May 15th, selected and introduced by
Fred Camper, and an expanded cinema day, as well as numerous screenings of
new and recent films and videotapes. Stan Brakhage's Persian Series and
Julie Murray's 'Untitled (Light)' will also be shown in a gallery on the
fourth floor on a continuous loop. Stan had always wanted to do this, and
this will be the first time his films have been integrated with painting and
sculpture in the galleries. Anthony McCall shows his first new 16mm film
installation since the 1970s, 'Doubling Back' , every Sunday, all day.
Filmmakers: Stan Brakhage, Pip Chodorov, Bradley Eros, Morgan Fisher, James
Foutopolos, Sandra Gibson, Sam Green, Peter Hutton, Isaac Julien, Bruce
McClure, Jonas Mekas, Julie Murray, Andrew Noren, Jim O'Rourke, Luis
Recoder, Liisa Roberts, Bill Siegel, Deborah Stratman, Jim Trainor.
There will be a brochure outlining each program in detail, soon to be posted
on the whitney website (www.whitney.org) and available at various other film
screening locations. If anyone would like a brochure sent by mail, please
email email suppressed
Tickets $6.
A full list of all the Biennial artists can also be found on the Whitney
website, with details of the show. The catalogue includes a box of artists'
projects. Some filmmakers have made posters, others have used celluloid
strips. The catalogue itself includes texts by all three curators (Chrissie
Iles, Deb Singer, Shamim Momin), who selected all parts of the exhibition
together including the film program. It also includes several other related
texts, including a new text by Laura Mulvey on film in the digital age,
Anais Nin's account of her first experience of LSD in the 1950s, a text by
Susan Buck-Morss, 'Beyond Terror', 'She Comes in Colors' by Tim Griffin, and
many others.
