Rumor has it that Apple tracked FCP serial numbers that were suspected of being
passed around, i.e. pirated. These numbers were progamed into upgrades and
hence the request for the original disk- not all upgrade users get that
request. Apple's a bit sneaky.

As for the crash during logging & capturing, it may be a third party extension
conflict or maybe the version of Quicktime. What else has been installed on
your computer? Do you have the most current/approved quicktime version for FCP
2 & OS 9.2? Is you OS 9.2 or 9.2.2- 9.2.2 is a bit more solid. FCP 2.0 or 2.0.2
(or what ever the last update was)?

Although you may not be interested in spending more money on software, I have to
say OS X is rock solid with FCP 3 or 4.

hope this helps,
