hey andy,

thom andersen's email is below, so if we use any of his movies, we can see
about bringing him to town.

i called you last night. we won. i'm in vegas right now, at the consumer
electronics show hoping that there are some free goodies i can just help
myself to. and if not, well, it just so happens that the adult entertainment
expo is happening at the same time and our ces badges will get us in.

so, here's the scoop: pioneer electronics put on a 48-hour filmmaking
competition for universities across the country. something like 20 entered,
a few less ended up participating. we beat universities with actual film
schools - the other two finalists were fsu (they had a FUCKING CRANE, like
one that went over a two story house, to use) and la film school (goddam
rich kids). we got a nice little trophy and $10k for the u. i'm asking you
nicely to think of us if you need some filler for any of your columns
because A)the UW doesn't give a shit about its student filmmakers, and even
if this wasn't an especially great (or especially good) film, we're still
getting recognition for it and the UW needs to take notice and at least
throw us a bone now and then; and, B) me and a prof are devising a plan to
set up an actual film production program: to set up a class for 10-15
students per quarter to make a short film each, to help each other on their
projects, and to use that $10k to buy cameras and equipment set aside
exclusively for these films. we don't anticipate too many problems, but if
its in print (i did an interview with kiro radio yesterday and hope they
include that part) then it will be that much harder for them to fuck us
over.

the film's called 'casual delivery', it's a straightforward, 3.5 minute
movie about a happy meeting for a blind date. i produced, and about 30
people, including actors, worked on it. david midgen was in charge of
actors, nick risinger was in charge of visuals. we didn't have a real
"director" because we were representing the university and i wanted amore
democratic process, which is both a great idea and a horrible idea for a
48-hour filmmaking thing. it starred lindsey desmul and steve west, uw drama
students. i recruited filmmakers from all over campus, from graphic design
to fine arts to drama to english.

ok, this is an internet stand and there are people waiting. i've gotta go. i
get back tonight at about 10, god willing.
